Sale! The Rope Fish (Erpetoichthys calabaricus) is also known as the Reed Fish or Snake Fish, all of which are fittingly descriptive for its slender, elongated body. The Rope Fish is related to Bichirs (Polypterus sp.) but has an even longer, more snake-like body with tiny pectoral fins.
Rope Fish are native to slow-moving or stagnant water environments and have the ability to breathe atmospheric air in the case of low dissolved oxygen in the water. Even though they can live in these less-than-ideal environments in the wild, they are sensitive to water quality and water parameter swings (particularly pH) in the aquarium. They are also an escape risk and may find their way out of any tanks that aren’t secure.
These fish are nocturnal and will be most active at night or in low light tanks. They are fairly docile and need plenty of hiding places and peaceful tankmates. While typically peaceful, they may prey on smaller fish and may sometimes need live foods to trigger a feeding response, especially when new to the tank. Feeder guppies, minnows and worms can be given if necessary but the Rope Fish should be weaned onto frozen meaty foods, worms, insects and crustaceans if possible for better nutrition and safety.
